The Most Important Commandment — The First Commandment

April 19, 2023

“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Matthew 22:37-39

Today, let us remind ourselves of what Jesus tells us is the most important commandment:

“‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Matthew 22:37-39

I’m so glad Jesus made it simple.

What this all hinges on is receiving the love of God. In order to love God with all of your heart and love others as yourself, you must first understand and receive the love God has for you as a son!

Here are some ways to receive the love of God and walk in it:

  • Meditate on truth.

Don’t entertain thoughts of condemnation, because they are not from God. (Romans 8:1, “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”)

  • Make decisions based on faith, not fear!

His word tells us that “perfect love casts out fear.” When we make decisions from here on out, do it by faith believing that He is for us and with us. (1 John 4:18, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.”)

  • Treat others with kindness and patience.

When we treat others poorly, we probably need to go back to the drawing board and receive the love of God for ourselves again. (1 Corinthians 13:4, “Love is patient and kind; Love is not jealous or boastful or proud.”)

I believe it’s no accident we are receiving this word today. God wants to call us His sons. God wants to remind you that He loves you! Let us pray this reminder over ourselves as we get ready for Men’s Summit:

“Father, I pray that I would receive by faith the fact that I am so loved by you. Not based on what I’ve done, but based on who I am. Lord, I pray this love would flow through me, today. In Jesus’ Name,

Amen.”
